Master of Arts in Educational Technology

Fall 2009-Spring 2010

During the 2009-2010 school year, I completed my internship where I taught fifth grade at CA Frost Elementary School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. During this year I took four courses: TE 801 (Professional Roles & Teaching Practice I), TE 802 (Reflecting and Integrating Teaching Practice I), TE 803 (Professional Roles & Teaching Practice II), and TE 804 (Reflecting and Integrating Teaching Practice II). Throughout these four courses, I learned instructional methods for teaching mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies to elementary students. Through each course I learned how to write lesson plans for each subject and designed and taught an entire unit. I also participated in lesson studies, experienced Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings, and learned classroom management strategies.

Fall 2013
CEP 810: Teaching for Understanding with Technology

Instructor: Kim Powell

This course was my first official course in the Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) program an also the first of three courses required to earn the Educational Technology Certificate. This course set foundational understanding and importance of learning theories with technology integration. I also learned about mindsets for teaching with technology and was introduced to my professional learning network (through Twitter). In this course, I learned a new skill (ballroom dancing) by only using online forums and YouTube videos. I was also introduced to the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework as a resource to improve teaching and learning.

Spring 2014
CEP 812 Applying Educational Technology to Issues of Practice

Instructor: William Marsland

CEP 812 was the final course toward the Educational Technology Certificate. In this course I learned how the use of technology can be used to solve educational problems. I learned about the different types of problems (well structured, ill structured, and wicked problems) but learned that humans cannot solve wicked problems smartly. I also spent time learning about my info-diet and how information is filtered before I even receive it. Lastly, I learned about the Universal Design for Learning and how technologies can be used to support students with special learning needs.

Summer 2014
CEP 800 Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings

Instructors: William Cain and Josh Rosenberg

This class focused on learners: how learners learn, understanding learners, and providing powerful learning experiences for learners. Throughout this course I read and researched various learning theories. Using learning theories, I learned about what learners already know and how to use this knowledge to help understand how technology can be used in education. I also evaluated different technologies and how these technologies can be used to address misconceptions and gaps students may have.

Fall 2013
CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technologies to Education

Instructor: Craig McMichael

This is the second course toward the Educational Technology Certificate. This course focused on the maker movement and a majority of our assignments were geared toward the maker kit of our choosing. I purchased a Raspberry Pi and used this maker kit to design a lesson using a magnify glass and the mini-computer. I also learned about MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and designed a fake MOOC about Flipped Learning. Throughout this couse I was able to understand how remixing is used in education and worked with group members to write a conference proposal.

Spring 2014
CEP 820 Teaching Students Online

Instructors: Dr. Anne Heintz and Sandra Sawaya

In this class I learned how to construct an online course using the science curriculum I currently teach. I built a hybrid course (as opposed to solely online) to fit the needs of my sixth grade students. Throughout the process of building a course, I learned about the research supporting online learning, rubrics for online courses, synchronous versus asynchronous courses, and how to develop an online presence. This class taught me how to use the curriculum I already teach, and make it available online in a way that is still engaging for students.

Summer 2014
CEP 815 Teachnology and Leadership

Instructors: Ben Gleason and Dr. Leigh Graves Wolf

In CEP 815 I learned all about becoming a technology leader. I first focused on what leadership is and what it is not, including qualities of successful leaders. I used the TPACK framework to better understand how to implement technologies in education as a technology leader. I was taught the difference between instrumental and missional thinking and the importance of technology leaders to ask missional questions rather than focusing on the technology itself. I learned that technology leaders create a vision based on what they know and what they see for the future.

Summer 2014
CEP 822 Approaches to Educational Research

Instructor: Tatyana Li

This course focused on educational research. I learned that educational research is one of the most difficult fields of research because of the variables in students, learning, technology, etc. Throughout this class, I learned about research questions, data collection, and statistical methods used to analyze various sets of data that my typically be found in educational research. I also conducted my own research using published educational articles on the topic of hybrid education.

Fall 2014
CEP 807 Capstone in Educational Technology

Instructor: Dr. Matt Koehler

This is my final course in the MAET program. In this class, I am designing and creating my online portfolio that will be sent to potential employers, colleagues, and other technology leaders. This process has allowed me to learn about design, and how to professionally present myself. By making my online portfolio, I am reflecting on all the classes I have taken to earn my Master’s Degree and am showcasing my assignments and accomplishments.
